Chapter Nine

Demarco

As I drove away from the city, Amanda looked out of the passenger’s side window. I was good at using my senses to detect when something has effected someone. The issue back at her condo had effected her badly.

“He’s the reason you need to forget. He’s the one who hurt you.” She probably didn’t want to talk about such things, but not talking things through wasn’t going to help her in the slightest.

“Yes. He cheated.” She shrugged. “I guess I wasn’t good enough for him.”

“No, that’s not it. He wasn’t good enough for you. He was never supposed to have you,” I said.

She turned slightly. “Thank you. I guess I needed something like that to make him realize that it’s really over between us. I can never go back to him.”

“It’s a pity that he kept harassing you. He deserves worse than that.”

“He probably does, but I don’t want to think about it. Our year together was a waste. We were just about to have the engagement party and all. He rented an entire country club for the night and paid for flights for all of his friends. I mean, he got the works.”

“Too bad. You’re not going back to that.”

She smiled. “No, I’m not. Tell me. How do shifters handle broken relationships?”

“We’re not so different. We have the same issues.”

“Trisha told me that some shifters mate for life.”

I nodded. “It’s true. Fated mates, that is, people who are mate marked to be together, mate for life.”

“Mate marked? That sounds kind of taboo.”

“Yeah. Mate marks. It’s said that two people can actual have identical marks. They’re meant to be together. Sort of like a birthmark, but with meaning. Most shifters, if not all shifters, are born with a birthmark. Something unique to them.”

“That’s romantic. Is that why you got all those tattoos. To cover your birthmark?”

I laughed. “No. My birthmark isn’t covered. It’s on my belly, right where my liver would be, I think.”

This time, she laughed. “Well, then you’ll have to show me your belly sometime, so I can verify your story.”

“You can see it anytime you like.”

She sighed. “I guess that means we’ll go our separate ways once this is all over.”

“Why do you say that?”

“You just explained it. You’re mate marked for another.”

“How do you know that?”

“Come on. You’re hot as hell and you’ll obviously find a wife or mate someday.”

“Maybe…” I replied.

“Don’t you ever want to get married? I mean, for Hailey’s sake, if you plan on adopting her, she’ll need a mother,” she said.

“I want to have a family, yes. One that includes Hailey.”

“Well then, you’re already one step ahead of the game. You’ll just need to find the woman.” She clasped her hands together like it’s been decided.

“She’d have to be like you,” I said.

Amanda’s eyes widened. “No. Oh no. I’m a mess. Look at my life. I don’t even know if I want to deal with men anymore.”

“With women?” I asked. I had to.

“No. Not that way. I love men. I love cocks.
